What to Ask!

Ask for an explanation of big words used by doctors, specialists and
therapists.

Ask what vision services are available.

Ask for second opinions.

Ask for an appeal of a health insurance denial.

Ask to have extraordinary medicines changed to a more typical or generic type.

Ask for free samples from doctors.
-
Ask the doctor to describe a service or treatment as "medically necessary",
"medically related", or "reasonable and necessary" to assist in having
treatments paid for by insurance companies.

Ask for a new service coordinator if a serious conflict arises or you feel that
an adequate job is not being done.

Ask for early intervention services such as OT, PT, Speech, Vision Therapy,
Music Therapy, Play Therapy, Behavioral Intervention, and Infant Stimulation.

Ask for an evaluation.

Ask therapists, interventionists, and doctors - "Are you trained to work with
children who have vision problems?"

Ask for adaptive equipment.

Ask for tinted car windows when glare is a problem for your child.

Ask if classes at recreation centers will be paid for by state funding.

Ask again and again when you are on a waiting list.

Ask to try equipment ahead of time on a trial basis before purchase.

Ask to meet the vision teacher where your child will attend kindergarten.

Ask other parents about their experiences.
