Teacher of the Visually Impaired

Purpose of Position

The Teacher of the Visually Impaired works as a key member of the transdisciplinary team to meet the educational goals of all children served by Anchor Center. This person provides other therapists with basic knowledge and expertise specific to young children with visual impairments in areas of vision, orientation and mobility and literacy.

 Position Basics
  • Full or Part time ranging from 20- 40 hours per week
  • Employee qualifies for benefits; prorated if part time           
  • Reports to the Executive Director
  • 195 work days/year
 Qualifications
  • Certification of or degree in education of students with visual impairments
  • Prefer certification in Orientation and Mobility
  • Prefer degree in early childhood education
  • Minimum of two years experience teaching and working with children birth through five years with vision impairment
  • Knowledge of young children with additional sensory impairment desired
  • Provide “best-practice” expertise, experience and leadership for children with visual impairments
 Duties and Responsibilities

Provide functional vision assessments to determine eligibility for programming, and collaborate with families and child’s team to determine appropriate program options

 Center-based
  • Team with all program staff to provide an optimal learning environment for each child attending Anchor Center
  • Develop, with other team members, Storybook Journey curriculum for center-based classes on a monthly and daily basis. 
  • Within Anchor Center’s budget obtain and utilize necessary resources for classroom activities that are developmentally appropriate
  • Coordinate field trips that correlate to the Storybook Journey.
  • Coordinate appropriate classroom groups
  • Coordinate the development of educational plans for each child including an end of year report on each preschooler
  • Meet with parents of students at least twice a year to discuss parents’ concerns and priorities for their children
  • Participate in IFSP’s and IEP’s as appropriate
  • Maintain communication between home and school through weekly notes home or phone calls to families.
  • Keep communication open with team and families
  • Keep up to date on Results Matters.  Be able to administer tests
 Home visits
  • Maintain a caseload of children seen in their homes or day settings as assigned by program coordinator
  • Refer to the job description for Itinerant Teacher of the Visually Impaired
  • Provide written reports appropriate to IFSP or IEP in a timely manner
  • Attend Home Visit meetings with Anchor Center staff to discuss concerns, updates, etc. with each other
 Outreach
  • Provide support to outlying communities as assigned and with the support of the Program Coordinator
  • Provide inservices and educational information to the community as requested and as able.
  • Provide written reports appropriate to IFSP or IEP in a timely manner
 Assessments
  • Participate in Transdisciplinary Play Based Assessments (TPBA).
  • Assess the vision, orientation and mobility, and literacy needs of each child
  • Provide a written report in a timely manner
 Other
  • Go the extra mile
  • Other duties as assigned by the executive director or program coordinator
  • Respect confidentiality of Anchor Center families and staff
  • Attend Anchor Center fundraising and family events as able
  • Meet regularly with director to discuss concerns, performance and enhance communication.
  • Meet annually with director to set goals and review past activities.
  • Represent Anchor Center in a professional and positive manner in the community
