What to Ask

  • Ask for an explanation of big words used by doctors, specialists and therapists.
  • Ask what vision services are available.
  • Ask for second opinions.
  • Ask for an appeal of a health insurance denial.
  • Ask to have extraordinary medicines changed to a more typical or generic type.
  • Ask for free samples from doctors.
  • Ask the doctor to describe a service or treatment as "medically necessary", "medically related", or "reasonable and necessary" to assist in having treatments paid for by insurance companies.
  • Ask for a new service coordinator if a serious conflict arises or you feel that an adequate job is not being done.
  • Ask for early intervention services such as OT, PT, Speech, Vision Therapy, Music Therapy, Play Therapy, Behavioral Intervention, and Infant Stimulation.
  • Ask for an evaluation.
  • Ask therapists, interventionists, and doctors - "Are you trained to work with children who have vision problems?"
  • Ask for adaptive equipment.
  • Ask for tinted car windows when glare is a problem for your child.
  • Ask if classes at recreation centers will be paid for by state funding.
  • Ask again and again when you are on a waiting list.
  • Ask to try equipment ahead of time on a trial basis before purchase.
  • Ask to try out a toy from Anchor on loan.
  • Ask for help with insurance issues.
  • Ask for help with funding issues.
  • Ask for help in finding funding for conferences, equipment, or respite care.
  • Ask for Internet links pertaining to children similar to your own (and check out Anchor's web site.)
  • Ask to meet the vision teacher where your child will attend kindergarten.
  • Ask other parents about their experiences.
